After months of constant Craigslist-searching and striking out, I finally bought a motorcycle yesterday!
It's a 2006 Yamaha FZ6 with 14k miles on it. It's been dropped on both sides, and went down on the right at speed (judging by the worn-down frame slider), but that's sort of a good thing, since I won't feel bad when I drop it myself. :)
The tires really need to be replaced. It looks like the old owner has never made a turn in his life, because the tires are worn down flat in the middle. The chain is way loose, the front left turn signal is hanging by a wire, and the fluids need to be replaced. But that's all easy to fix, and means I got the thing for like $1900 below Blue Book (and $200 under his asking price).
After helping me check out the bike before buying it,
deccadoggy convinced me to perform the Ride of Terror myself. So, after a bunch of circling the block, I rode the 20 miles from Millbrae to Palo Alto. Decca ran interference for me in my car, so I was able to ride down 101 without people fucking with me too much. And luckily I am confident enough to not give a shit when other people start honking at me for stalling out. :)
And then today I went out for a bit, riding around the parking lot at work, getting a feel for cornering and stuff.
So, yeah, I've got a whole summer of riding ahead of me-- mad excited! Thanks so much to
aldebron and
deccadoggy (and many others) for the help. :)

hukka Now all I need (besides registration and insurance) is a plausibly-deniable furry license plate. :p
