Day 03 - Your parents
Well my dad is Tom and my mam is Rene. They’d been friends for some while I believe before mam moved down here(her being a wee Scots wifey) and they ended up getting married and having lil ol me.
Mam makes awesome cheesecake and lemon posit! Spagbol, lasagne, carbonara, pasta bake… I could go on. I feel for her because she has a wheat intolerance. The thought of no proper bread in my life just isn’t fun. While dad has issues eating pretty much anything at the moment what with his teeth. I keep telling him the dentists right that it stems from smoking all these years. It’s a good thing he quit when he did. If only mam would break the habit too. She used to be a teacher until about 4 years ago (I think) but now she’s retired. She loves her historical fiction and a thriller with a bit of a twist. She also loves crafting. She used to cross stitch most of her free time but now it tends to be quilting, scrapbooking and card making. Specially at xmas - huge production line is involved and everything XD and if no one grumbles she puts on the craft channel on sky. Lol she can spend hours just watching the shows and stuff on sale. She warm and cuddly in that loving mum kinda way. Me and mam don’t really hang out much coz what time I get to spend when I’m not at work would be going to cinema and the like and mam’s choosy about what she goes to see. We do like to go to Wagamamas though and because I’ve got the crafting bug too we spend time together talking about crafty related goodness.
Dad’s a local born lad. He used to teach at the same school as mam, though he’s taught in other schools too before Jubilee. At one stage I used to go to the school at the same time as they were both teachers ¬_¬ (people if you every teach and have kids don’t put your kid through that) He was the headmaster for many years before leaving. Now he works as a university lecturer/marker. In his spare time he tends to bake. Gary Rhodes is god to him :p and Rachel Allen goddess XD I’ve always said you could tell how he was feeling by how often you’d find him in the kitchen kneading pastry - it’s he sort of de-stresser. If something’s bugging him in the kitchen he goes - and he has to go there and then. If he gets an idea in his head he really has to do it there and then. He makes a mean choc gnash tart and his pies doeth rock! It used to be drawing. Even now if there’s a scrap of paper he’ll do doodling swirls and the like but when I was younger I was always very aware of him painting portraits of peoples pets. I think that’s where I got my desire to draw, seeing him so focused on creating something so remarkable. He doesn’t really draw any more though - the joy of getting older I guess. Instead he likes to read up on history. Him and mam used to take me and my sis on hols around England. Always saw a cathedral wherever we stayed. If there was a bump in a field somewhere dad always seemed to know what it was all about.
We still do a fair bit of stuff together. We go out to the cinema and go out for meals. Our big thing is Yo Sushi. We go to the one at the metro centre since it’s the best by far. And the staff recognise us by sight now. XD It makes me happy that he’s willing to try the things I like. Though I know that even after all these years he finds the fangirl side of me a bit disconcerting. I can understand that. It is a strange thing and I do seem to be able to slip into fangirl mode really easily - like turning on a switch. I suppose I don’t understand why he always gets the auto trader to read when it’s released even though he’s got no plans on getting a car. I guess we all have our quirky habits.
