It's been a few months now, since she came back to Virginia with him. The 'newness' of living together has started to fade, replaced now by a feeling of...comfort, familiarity. It's such a precious thing to him, having someone to come home to now. Technically, he'd had it with his previous marriages, but from the start, things had felt wrong somehow. Time had made the flaws more apparent.
Waking up next to her, falling asleep with her curled against him every night, it just makes him feel like a damn lucky man. And he's learned enough in time not to ever take it for granted.
They've had a nice evening out: dinner, and a play, and he's holding her hand while they walk back to the car. Unfortunately, they'd needed to park far away, and this area isn't as well lit as he'd hoped it would be. He's mindful of their surroundings even as he asks, "So are you in the mood for a late night snack somewhere?"
There's an ice cream parlor not far from here, open 24 hours a day. It's cool out, but not cold enough that eating ice cream would be ridiculous.
