The library. Lionel's refuge from abuse as a child, and his kingdom as an adult - every book specifically selected, read, and analyzed. He can quote much of them from memory, these beautiful tomes, many valuable early editions, some simply practical copies littered with his own notes and observations. They are, in many ways, his greatest fortune. And now they are as useless to him as his eyes.
He has an electronic reader: irritating and slow and a constant reminder to him of his limitations. Martha is a wonderful help, skimming the newspapers and reading aloud the most pertinent articles, but he can hardly ask her to read Dostoyevsky to him, although he's sure he could easily listen to her for hours.
Tonight is their first meeting after hours, and he's chosen the library precisely because it's the last place Lex would think to find him. He arrives there early, bearing wine and brandy, and simply sits, relishing the scents and atmosphere of the place. Despite his disability, it's still relaxing to be among so many pure, non-judgmental texts.
It isn't long before he hears footfalls on the stairs. "Martha?"
