But she protected me when bad things were happening! I had to protect her too... s-she helped me with a lot of things, but I couldn't help her at all. Maybe I really am useless...

You are not useless. I'm not sure what happened, but I know whatever happened was beyond your control and beyond my control and beyond anyone else's. Bad things happen. It's...a sad part of life. But, you can't blame yourself whenever something bad happens.
