Apparently, the weather's not been so great in the UK. Well, I wouldn't know about that as I've been in scorching Johannesburg this week.
I've been here for the last week working, and have basically seen the hotel, the office, and a few pubs. Despite that, I've had a great time, and the hospitality of the locals has been wonderful. The Absa (South African bank owned by Barclays) offices are in about the worst part of central Jo'burg, but despite massive warnings about how unsafe the area is, I've felt pretty happy walking around this week. That's not to say that bad things don't happen, but I reckon that if you take the necessary precautions, it's possible not to spend every waking second fearing for your safety.
The most important thing to know about Jo'burg is that the steak here is the best I've ever had. So much so, that I had it 3 nights in a row at one point this week. I fear my colon is not working properly anymore.
Not sure I'd recommend Jo'burg for the average curious tourist however. It's not terribly picturesque and despite my experiences has a deserved reputation for being dangerous. Cape Town and various stops on the Garden Route are much better by all accounts, and I'm keen to see them one day.
Anyways, just time for a quick (free) beer, and I'll be on my way home. Can't wait to see Ethan (and Katie).
