Chapter 6: Hope Floats

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

“Oh JiHo-shii.” YunHo called for the third time, but he still got no response. The man continued to stand motionless by the entrance, staring at JaeJoong’s face.

JaeJoong, too, stood stock still in front of the unfamiliar man. But he finally snapped out of his surprised daze when he heard YunHo calling the man by his name. Shifting back to professional mode, JaeJoong bowed and led the man to sit down.

The man was a still picture of magnificence, but JiHo thought that he was a lot more radiant when he was moving. He bowed at him with a flowing ease that JiHo hadn’t seen in anyone else, and he had to shake himself out of his trance to follow the man inside the room.

YunHo watched JiHo, who watched JaeJoong in turn, and motioned for the man to take a seat in front of him. He gritted his teeth as his visitor’s eyes never left JaeJoong even as YunHo spoke to him, “So what brings you here?”

“Oh, just a friendly visit.” JiHo had forgotten that he wanted to beat some sense into YunHo the moment he saw JaeJoong, and still had his eyes glued at the said man as he moved out of the room.

No employees were allowed inside YunHo’s office unless called for, besides JaeJoong so he decided to make the customary tea for visitors. He made his way into the small break-room and reached up for the pantry where the tea was kept when his vision abruptly swayed so he grabbed the edge of the counter instead. The woozy fit was gone as soon as it came as soon as it so he just brushed it off as the stress catching up on him. Four months of working for a slave driver must’ve been taking its toll. So he took the opportunity to take a few relaxing breaths while waiting for the tea to steep.

“A friendly visit? I don’t remember being friends with you.” YunHo decided to get to the point. “Why start now?”

JiHo’s gaze finally turned to YunHo when the door closed, blocking his view of the stunning man. He was now looking at the other businessman with a smirk on his face. “I didn’t say it was you that I wanted to get friendly with, did I?”

YunHo gritted his teeth harder at that. “If you’ve been standing outside that door long enough, you’ll know that Kim JaeJoong is as good as mine.”

Kim JaeJoong, I’ll remember that name. YunHo’s displeasure at his visitor’s words was clear on his face. His jaw was set tight and his eyes were filled with a possessive contempt towards JiHo. He was looking exactly like a boy whose favorite toy was being threatened to be taken away. JiHo thought that it could be fun to play with him a little. “Well, I don't know about that, but I’m sure that I’ve been there long enough to hear that he refused you. So I don’t see where the ‘property’ theory comes in.”

YunHo would’ve launched himself at the other man in the swift flash of rage that assailed him, but JaeJoong chose that moment to come back in. He was carrying a tray, and set the teacups down in front of the men. YunHo’s visitor was back to staring at him, and it was making him slightly uncomfortable.

Fury was boiling in YunHo’s veins when JiHo was back to watching JaeJoong like no one else was in the room, oblivious or deliberately ignoring the uneasiness that JaeJoong was oozing. He was holding his steaming cup of tea while silently glaring at JiHo when a sudden ‘clang’ and a scorching pain assaulted his hand. “Shit!”

JaeJoong instantaneously ran to YunHo’s aid, instinct driving his body to the other man’s side. He made a grab for YunHo’s hand. “Oh my god, YunHo. Are you okay?”

Observing the scene in front of him, JiHo didn’t miss the flicker of hurt that crossed JaeJoong’s face when YunHo snatched his hand back just as instantly as it was taken. But it almost looked like it was unintentional, because YunHo’s cellphone rang at that moment, too.

YunHo listened to the person at the other end of the line, ignoring the throbbing pain in his hand. He was silent for awhile, and then flipped his phone back closed. He then turned to the other people in the room. “I have to go. Please attend to our visitor, Mr. Kim.” He was gone soon after, leaving JaeJoong and JiHo behind him.

JaeJoong’s concerned gaze followed YunHo’s back; he knew that the other man must be in pain. The tea was by no means warm and his hand must be stinging with the burn. He was going to follow him out to insist on tending on his injury when his vision blurred again. But this time his knees gave on him and he was thrown slightly off balance.

His arms were braced to catch himself, but he never hit the ground. He looked beside him and saw YunHo’s visitor- Oh JiHo if he was not mistaken- holding him up by the waist.

Holding the man felt like heaven: his body was warm, soft, and everything sweet rolled into one. But he knew this wasn’t the right moment to have those thoughts. “Hey, you okay?”

“Ah, sorry.” JaeJoong immediately broke off the other mans hold. Once again, the wooziness was gone in an instant. “I’m okay now.” He was going to proceed on closing up the office when the lightheadedness once more attacked him and there was a queasy sourness quickly rising up his throat.

JaeJoong ran to the bathroom where he emptied the contents of his stomach, YunHo’s visitor in the office forgotten.

The engine roared into life, and YunHo was ready to leave the building. But this niggling voice inside his head kept on nagging him to not leave JaeJoong alone with JiHo. He’s heard enough about JiHo’s proclivities to know that it wasn’t safe to leave the prey to his predator unaided.

He shut the engine off in a huff, his emotions conflicting inside his head. He hated JaeJoong, so why was a violent possessiveness scratching its way out of his heart? Why was he feeling like he could rip Oh JiHo’s eyes out just for staring at JaeJoong? And if he hated JaeJoong so much, why did he even call him his?

And so YunHo found himself in front of the executive elevator, waiting for it to open. He immediately entered when it dinged, and got a shock when he turned around. The elevator across from the one he was currently in on opened to unload its passengers. And there stood JiHo, his arms around JaeJoong’s form. He really couldn’t see JaeJoong’s face, but he would never mistake that tuft of platinum blonde hair for anyone else’s. He was stunned still and it was too late before he could reach out to stop the lift doors from sliding shut.

JaeJoong suddenly felt sick after puking his guts out, and he had to call JunSu to ask him to come and pick him up. But JunSu wouldn’t answer after four calls, causing him to get worried. He could barely hold himself up straight and was struggling to keep his hold on the sink when JiHo entered the washroom. The man wordlessly wrapped his arms around him and declared to help him get home and JaeJoong wouldn’t even argue. He was really out of himself and he couldn’t trust himself to get home on his own.

YunHo cursed out loud. He’s never been so angry that the executive elevator only stops on the executive floors. The wait for the elevator to stop at his floor was excruciatingly slow and YunHo practically jabbed the button for it to go back down again. He mentally noted to get people to make this elevator move faster.

He finally got back to the parking lot, and from his view by the elevator doors he could see JiHo helping JaeJoong inside his car. Damn, I’d never known anyone to move that fast. And why was JaeJoong even going with him? He’s such a fucking slut!

Without even thinking about it, YunHo got into his own car and started it up, tracing JiHo’s trail. The road they were taking seemed awfully familiar, he thought. Because even when he hated himself for it, he had actually given in to the temptation of following JaeJoong home more than once. He’d never really gotten to where JaeJoong lived, but he’d gotten far enough to know that the road JiHo’s car was taking was the exact same one that he last followed just a week ago.

From where he was located-two cars away, on the right lane- he could see that JaeJoong’s body was slack, and his head was slightly leaning toward’s the other man’s shoulders. He could barely resist the urge to jam his palm on the honk, and he was going to do just that when-

A shrill ringing alerted his ears, and YunHo’s attention was averted from the vehicle he was tailing.

“YunHo, where are you? This is really important!!”

“I know, I know. I’ll be right there.”

“What is my post-it note doing here?” DongHae asked as soon as YunHo entered his private office.

He didn’t seem to notice his friend’s mood; the anger/frustration seething out of his body, or the spaced out look on his face. “What?”

DongHae picked to folder up and lifted it in front of YunHo’s face. “This. Why is my post-it here?”

His brows burrowed further in confusion. “I just left it the way it was. Why” was I supposed to keep it in my wallet or something?”

The snappy retort went unheeded as well. And if YunHo was confused, DongHae was even more so. “The folder I gave you was blue, YunHo. This is green.” And it contained JaeJoong’s files, not the financial reports for the past five years.

“Aunt SeunYoung gave it to me like that. And why should the color matter? Sheesh, Hae. What’s the matter with you?” YunHo’s head was swirling with an overload of emotions and he didn’t feel like dealing with something like the color of a folder being different from how it was left.

“SeunYoung? She gave it to you?” YunHo just gave him an I-just-said-that look. “Well, the matter with me, YunHo, is that this isn’t the file I left you.” DongHae paused to watch YunHo raise an eyebrow, “I left you JaeJoong’s file. It contained everything that has happened to him all those years that you were gone.”

The only thing that registered in his mind at DongHae’s words is that he could’ve known about his son earlier, if it wasn’t that scheming bitch. He was about to leave the room in search of the woman, but was stopped by DongHae.

“Before you do anything else, YunHo, you have to see this.” He pulled out a copy of the file from his briefcase, thankful that he had the mind to make himself one, and handed it to YunHo. They both sat down, and DongHae watched hi friend peruse the file.

…dropped out in his third year of college…

…moved to Ganghwa-gun by himself after dropping out…

…now lives with his son Kim MoonBin and his cousin…

…worked various manual labor jobs before getting accepted as a clerk…

…wrote letters addressed to Boston, MA. All of which got redirected to Choi SeunYoung’s P.O. Box…

Reading the file only added more questions to his list. Didn’t JaeJoong have a lover? So weren’t there any mentions of that? And manual labor? JaeJoong could’ve easily found some rich guy to finance him couldn’t he?

“And there’s on more thing I have to tell you, YunHo.” YunHo braced himself. “That letter I gave you at the airport, it wasn’t form JaeJoong. Your father-” DongHae hadn’t been able to finish his statement. YunHo’s fist colliding with his jaw prevented him from that.

The mention of his father answered every previous question he had in his mind. Everything suddenly seemed so clear to him: JaeJoong’s happiness when he saw him, JaeJoong’s confusion and hurt at how YunHo treated him, why JaeJoong never told him about MoonBin. That single word answered everything, and YunHo suddenly felt like the stage curtains were lifted up only to have daggers flung at him.

“You knew that it wasn’t from him and you didn’t tell me? Do you have any idea what that letter caused me to do to JaeJoong?” he moved towards DongHae, fist set to attack once more. His other hand had grabbed DongHae by the collar. “And how dare you show me your fucking face after all of this, you filthy shit?”

DongHae didn’t move to defend himself, and YunHo had to stop at that. DongHae had never been one to just stand and take getting hit.

The blows never came and DongHae eventually looked up at his friend. “Are you ready to talk now?”

“Just make sure that whatever you tell me now aren’t anymore lies, DongHae. I don’t need anymore of those.” YunHo wanted nothing but to smash the guy’s face in. but if there was anything that he’d learned in all this, it was that not listening to whatever anyone has to say will get him nowhere. It certainly got him nowhere with JaeJoong.

“I swear, YunHo. Everything I’m going to say from this point on is the truth.” They both moved to sit back down and DongHae started his speech. “First of all, I only did what I did because my mother was sick, and if you were in my position I certainly wouldn’t blame you for doing the same.

“But my mother is dead now, and I don’t have any reason to keep this knowledge to myself. And I realized that even my mother wouldn’t have wanted me to betray a friendship for her. And before you get impatient, I need you to know that I had no idea whatever that letter contained. I still don’t right at this moment. I just know now that whatever it was served to break you and JaeJoong up, I figured that much out.

“I also learned that all those letters JaeJoong have been sending you are inside this house. I know its dumb for someone to do that but it’s really to your advantage. SeunYoung is keeping it inside a locked chest somewhere in here.

“I know that what I did was unforgivable, especially because I was a part of a scheme that took you away from your own child. And from what I’ve heard, things between you and JaeJoong haven’t gotten any better. So now, what I really want to tell you is that I am willing to help you get through this, YunHo. I haven’t been a good friend, and doing this now won’t make up for it. But I want to help you get JaeJoong back.”
