Don't call it a clunker

It had taken months of hard work, a fact which would have had some of the clan loudly wondering what Xigbar considered to be hard work, but they'd finally been able to afford an airship. Still, the budget had been a little restricted, and the nefarious purposes Xigbar had in mind meant that he'd gone for the ability to hide things over mere ( Read more... )

"It's a salvage," Simon observed, looking a little surprised.

That he had referred to the ship with a non-gendered pronoun showed that he didn't respect the airship or seaship tradition of all vehicles being female. However, that he was able to differentiate between a ship that was prevalent circa War of the Magi and one of the modern models showed that he spent too much time with his nose in books and was probably a history nerd.

Refurbished salvages weren't exactly common, but they were far from unknown. Most weren't skyworthy and were generally taken apart for scrap, but the good ones were highly prized due to their little-known and obscure power source making them jagd-proof. Being able to fly without having to avoid certain areas was useful, and even though the dangerous micro-purvama issue didn't open all avenues of exploration to the crews that piloted them, it certainly broadened the horizons of those lucky enough to own one.

It was a mystery how the old engines worked, even for those well-versed in the workings of airships, and attempts to reproduce the mechanism in modern ships had been attempted and failed numerous times, proving that taking the 'battery' out of old ships and putting them into new ones wasn't yet possible. The parts, however, did fetch an extremely high-price on the market, though they were only sold to people who were already lucky enough to possess an old ship.

"It's... nice." He said, deciding that it was the nicest thing he could say about the ship at that moment.

He hadn't, after all, see the inside.

"Heh," Xigbar said, but neglected to expand on the thought behind it. It was a junker; probably should have been scrap, but now she was flying again. Poetry and romanticism aside, a ship like this would keep going for as long as you had a mechanic capable of handling its engine.

It was ideal for people whose futures could last a hell of a long time.

He tapped Axel on the shoulder, addressing him casually; "We'll stash the case somewhere it won't slide around. Then you can look after our passenger." He said it with a grin. Secretly, he suspected that Axel might enjoy some alone time with the geek to go and freak him out some more.

Not to mention that the doctor was clearly running from something, so having someone more than capable of holding his own watching over him was a good idea. At least for as long as they were still here. Once they took off, it would matter less.

Axel slapped a grin onto his face, but the tensed jaw, slightly cocked eyebrow and fractionally narrowed eyes showed, very clearly, that he was not impressed with this idea. It wasn't exactly a secret that he disliked doctors and scientists and found their company more tedious than anything else ever, so Xigbar palming their passenger off onto him wasn't met with an open display of glee and gratitude.

He didn't say anything, though. As Simon stood wordless, so did he, but the difference was in their expressions. Simon looked stiff, serious and alert and he looked casual, but forcing a more pleasant expression than the one that would have reflected how he was feeling.

"Play nice," Xigbar said, unnecessarily. It definitely gave the impression that there was a possibility that Axel wouldn't. It wasn't clear whether he said it as a genuine warning, or just to worry the doctor some more.

He entered the ship through the cargo hold. It was an expansive room, but rather bare and basic. While it had been cleaned up, there hadn't been much in the way of cosmetic work done, although patches of fresh metal and shiny welds gave evidence of functional repairs or additions. There were tethers in places, chains and straps at key points at the wall, and floor, there to keep cargo from slipping around in turbulence, or during evasive manoeuvres, although they could be applied to other purposes if your mind was that sort of bent.

It had certainly occurred to Xigbar.

Probably to Larxene too.

"Here'll do," he said, indicating a spot that was out of the way, but not outright hidden. They could hide it if they had to, but for now, since they were acting the legit traveller and carrier, stashing it away so it couldn't be seen would only look suspicious.

Axel didn't look as if 'playing nice' was his strong point, but he gave his 'boss' a half-assed, two-fingers-to-the-temple salute and put the case down where he'd indicated all the same. He didn't miss Simon's wince as he did it, so he figured that there was something extremely delicate in the case, if not valuable. Whatever it was could be very useful should he refuse to pay, especially since the slight cringe and look of apprehension on their client's face seemed to show that whatever he was carrying had sentimental value, as well as the possibility of it being the normal, monetary kind.

"Right, right." He said, flexing his fingers once he was free of it. The damn thing was heavy considering how compact it was.

Simon, he noticed, had to physically resist checking on the case. To Axel's surprise, he did manage it, but only because he consciously didn't want to look too attached. Clever boy, he thought with a smirk.

Xigbar clocked the attachment, too, but their client was obviously a quick study, and didn't entirely trust the shady men he'd hired.

Very clever boy.

"Good," he said, almost absently. "I'm going to check in with fuzzface. If you see our pilot, tell it to shake a leg."

Then he left, heading towards the cockpit where Xaldin was most likely waiting.
