Boggling over the USB port in the rental car.

Okay, the more things change the more they stay the same. The car is a 2010 Kia something-or-other that I am renting from Enterprise while I am here in Atlanta.

The VW at home has three 12v outlet ports. Not a “cigarette lighter” to be found, but three ports clearly marked 12v outlet. Two for the front and one for the back seat. You know, so the passenger can charge his or her phone on a long drive or something.

But to find a USB jack marked “iPod Power” and a standard audio jack in the dash of the rental shows that auto manufacturers are realizing what RIAA has yet to figure out, that the mp3 and mp3 player are here to stay. People live attached to their iPhone, or iPod, and have all of their music with them. Average folks don’t want to listen to the radio when they have all of their music in their pocket, they want to connect the music to the car and listen as they drive. Requiring a car kit is foolish when you realize that everyone wants to do this, and so the auto designer simply includes the minimum support necessary in the design of the dash.

Still, boggles the mind a bit, the auto industry being progressive in any fashion.
