There is a superstition in my family (and possibly the rest of the chinese community) that things happen in threes. Of course this is all a matter of when you start and stop counting. None the less the superstition persists and this week was a cool example of that for me.
First
myhelena and I went to the butterfly conservatory in Niagara and it was fantastic. Anyone who has not gone should go. Natural lighting, lush vegetation and a startling number of free flying butterflies served to make it a very captivating experience. I plan to post up some pictures when 256k.org stops swallowing them. The butterflies are surprisingly friendly and they swoop and glide all around you. If you hold still long enough they will even land on you. We both had some hitchhikers for a while. The variety of colour size and shape was awesome. Something about the butterflies draws out childish delight!
Second was a curious experience with a stranger. A woman greeted me on the street with a compliment. When I didn't run away she kept right on talking to me. She told me that god had a purpose for each of us and that we just had to reach inside ourselves to find it. Then she said that she was 55 years old and had no idea what her purpose was, but hoped that I would figure mine out. She talked briefly about her son and her daughter. Then she asked me to hold out my hands and promised that she wouldn't hurt me. Without touching me, she put her hands under then over and around mine. She ran her hands above my arms and shoulders, then held them just under my chin. She was standing quite close to me to do this and when her hands stopped I just looked at her to see what was next. She leaned in and kissed me on the cheek. Then she wished me a good evening and went on her way. It was beautiful.
Third was something magical. Growing up in the city I haven't had much occasion to hang out with fireflies. Last night on a whimsical trip to King City with
256, we wandered into a field full of fireflies. They blinked green on/off on/off on/off all around us. It was like being a fairy story. Perhaps we found the twilight lands between, or perhaps nature is just that wonderful. In the quiet night under the brightness of the stars it was be easy to believe either.
