I have a thing for houseplants, I currently have 27 in my apartment and two at work. I like growing things, and I'm fairly good at it. Not all of my plants are doing exceedingly well, but I manage to keep them alive. Last October, I decided that it would be fun to expand my collection to something a bit more exotic. So, I spent about $100 putting together a terrarium full of carnivorous plants. I've been very pleased with my purchase so far. Initially, the tank was pretty bare as it only had the two sundews, pitcher plants and venus fly-traps I had bought from "The Indoor Sun Shoppe" in Ballard. I was pleasently surprised when I discovered that all sorts of other plants had ridden in on the soil that the original six plants were potted in. In particular, I have a lot of little plants called "Butterworts" and a really nice ground cover of different types of moss.
About two years ago, I purchased several little ebony giraffes from an African import store on Capitol Hill called Uzuri. The original plan was to urethane them and put them into a freshwater tropical aquarium I was planning on putting together. When I moved back to Wallingford, my fascination with aquariums had to be shelved until I moved into a place that was more suitable. I still had the giraffes though. About a month after I put the carnivorous plant terrarium together, I came up with the idea of turning it into an HP Lovecraft themed tank.
Basically, in addition to the carnivorous plants (which are nearly as large as the giraffes), I would put in the urethaned giraffes and a cool looking fossil that I had found. To do it completely, I would have to put in these really gross african centipedes that I saw once at the pet store that used to be next to the Indoor Sun Shoppe. However, that's just too gross, even for me. Not to mention that the centipedes would probably eat the plants or get out or something. Still, I think the tank looks really cool.
Here it is . . .
