You Can Close Your Eyes

Every so often I'll get a song in my head and it will stay there until it's said its piece/peace, so to speak.  Recently, that song is James Taylor's "You Can Close Your Eyes."

Listen to the lyrics.  Is it a lullaby?  Is it a song about dying?  Perhaps both.  At the 9/11 memorial service, Paul Simon performed "Sounds of Silence" and JT played this song.  So there's a good likelihood that the song is about dying. In fact, it may be a song which is being sung by one who has departed and to sooth the emotions of a grieving loved one.  My favorite part is the promise of meeting again "on another day" where "they can stay as long as they like."  After all, it is the sadness of the passing of things that strike the deepest pain in us.  The loss of a loved one who will never return to us in this life.  So, to have a song where the singer is promising to transcend the finality of death -- that is both beautiful and true (IMO).
