Secret Sign or Symbol of the Day

Lizard

Lizards are attracted to the heat of the Sun, closely linked to its light, and synonymous with the soul that seeks knowledge and enlightenment.  Christian symbolism regards the stillness of the lizard, basking in the warmth of the sun, as the equivalent of religious contemplative ecstasy.  Egyptian hieroglyphs provide further evidence of the lizard as a benevolent creature, where its symbol means “plentiful.”  In other parts of Africa, the lizard is a messenger between man and God, and one of the key messages given by the creature, rather unusually, was that there was no life to be expected after death.

Because the lizard, like the snake, sloughs off its dead skin, both creatures symbolize rebirth and regeneration.  Therefore, the lizard was the favored animal of shamans because it apparently has power of life over death - it was believed that the lizard could walk in both the seen and unseen worlds, the worlds of the living and the dead.

The importance of the lizard to the Inca people is demonstrated by its dramatic appearance carved into the Pampas Colorado of Peru as part of the famous Nazca Lines.  This small creature appears as the largest single symbol, 590 feet (180 meters) long, and probably visible only from above, from the viewpoint of the Gods.  Because the lizard seems to be difficult to kill and has a tough scaly armor - like skin, warriors wore this skin as a protective talisman.
