Samhain is the Celtic Fire Festival that marked the transition from one year to the next. Commonly called the "Pagan New Year," Samhain is celebrated by most neopagans from sundown November eve until sundown November 1st. From Peter Berresford Ellis' _Dictionary of Celtic Mythology_: Samhain marked the end of one pastoral year and the beginning of the next. It was the time of the year when this world and the Otherworld met openly and without barriers. Homefires, which burned all year, were extinguished and could only be relit from a ceremonial fire built by the Druids.
