Hiking season is winding down for me but I still had a great time hiking up to Jamison Lake. Quite a difference from the peak of the summer. Almost nobody on the trail or at the lake. The big exception was seven mountain bikers coming downhill as I was leaving. I don't know where they were but apparently they were supposed to head back up toward Gold Lake. They missed the turn. We passed eachother again later but they were pushing their bikes uphill.
I tried this recipe at a raw food potluck. I used cashews and increased to about 3/4 cup. I think you can even increase to a full cup. I used fewer ice cubes, maybe 10 or 12, which seemed to work fine.
2/3 cup raw, unsalted Brazil nuts
2/3 cup fresh medjool dates, pitted (about 8 dates, more if you prefer a sweeter ice cream)
1/2 cup water
2 tsp pure vanilla extract
20 medium-sized ice cubes
1. Blend the Brazil nuts, dates, water, and vanilla together until smooth.
2. Add the ice cubes and blend until smooth.
Serve immediately.
Options: add fresh strawberries or blueberries for a real treat
And of course world events don't go away:
I watched Obama’s press conference this week, and I was reminded again of what a misfit he is for the presidency, and what a misfit he is for our time. He doesn’t seem to get the concept that an effective president has to get in fights. He doesn’t seem to understand that there are genuine enemies to the public interest out there (and, mostly, that they’re not to be found overseas). He doesn’t seem to understand that the reason presidents have to get into fights is because these enemies exist, because they are ruthless and entirely sociopathic, and because their victories are the public’s losses.

David Michael Green Two years after the collapse of Lehman Brothers sparked the greatest financial and economic crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s, none of the underlying contradictions of the world capitalist system has been resolved. On the contrary, they are assuming ever-more malignant forms as the ruling classes all over the world launch an offensive against the working class to make it pay for the crisis.
