So I dropped by a meeting of a local book club to see if I might suggest a book or two for reading. Unfortunately the books I had in mind the local library doesn't have in stock which pretty much takes them out of the running. There's not much of a budget to get books that don't have some kind of popular appeal, although some mighty bizarre recommendations are made just the same. Some books by Charlaine Harris might be okay, but I'm not convinced I'll read that suggestion. It's not like I've been active enough in the group to have any clout, so no big deal, but I was hoping some of my ideas might have been worth something. I guess I can always buy something I want to read. I have the time now for sure.

Joanne Laurier The drone strikes are part of an explosion of American militarism that has very different aims than combating terrorism or assuring the security of the US population. It is driven by the crisis of US capitalism and the attempt by the American ruling elite to overcome it by military means--first and foremost by imposing US hegemony over the energy-rich and strategically vital regions of the Persian Gulf and Central Asia.

Bill Van Auken With US pressure growing for increased European military involvement in Afghanistan the attack on Westergaard, together with the failed Detroit plane bombing, are being deliberately exploited to break down widespread public opposition to militarism and create conditions where European nations can massively step up their own commitment to the “war against terror."

Stefan Steinberg Obie's weird annoying glottal barking tone becomes even more noticeable, and grating, than it usually is, in this lovingly chosen and carefully stitched-together sonic quilt. He's even started to syncopate the second syllable of "terr'rism" and "terr'rist" the way Bush did.
