How can people read the books, buy the merchandise, go to the websites, watch the movies, and yet profess that they truly, madly, deeply
despise the character of Harry Potter?
It doesn't make any sense to me when people say they hate Harry, and only continue reading to find out what happens to the other characters. The series is from Harry's POV, after all. The entire storyline, and the way characters are perceived, is from Harry's perspective. Everything is coloured by Harry - Harry's thoughts, Harry's destiny, Harry's choices. How can you read and apparently enjoy the books (enough to be involved in fandom), yet really hate the person those books are entirely centered around?
I think perhaps it's different if a character is unlikeable yet still compelling, but to hear some talk it seems to me that they genuinely hate everything about Harry, and don't find him to have many redeeming features at all, if any :S
... Though I can't understand how anyone could *hate* Harry anyway, so maybe that bias has something to do with my lack of understanding. Ahahayeahanyway :)
Bottom line: If you don't like the protagonist, if you think he's irritating, self-centered and mean, then why bother reading? *ponders*
