Climate change petition

May 03, 2007 16:10

If any of you feel strongly about climate change and the need to think about the future, please read the following (also bear in mind that I didn't write it, that's why it sounds the way it does!):

Dear friends,

I thought you would like to know about a new organisation, Avaaz, that is setting up a massive global pressure campaign to demand government action on climate change.

This week, the official UN body on climate science announced that humankind can avert a climate catastrophe--but only if politicians change course, and fast. Avaaz has set up a tool allowing anyone in the world to send their national leaders a personal message on this issue.

The scientific report will be meaningless if it's not backed up by a global outcry. Click here to send a message to world leaders:

Avaaz.org is a community of global citizens who take action on the major issues facing the world today. Its aim is to ensure that the views and values of the world’s people -- and not just political elites and unaccountable corporations -- shape global decisions. Avaaz.org members are taking action for a more just and peaceful world and a vision of globalization with a human face. Avaaz means "voice" or "song" in a variety of Asian, Middle Eastern and European languages. There are already 1 million people from 189 countries in the Avaaz.org community.

I'm never convinced how much these petitions work (witness the Road Tax fiasco) but it can't hurt to sign it.

petition, climate change
