Election thoughts

While I applauded as much as anyone when Obama became the official president-elect, results at home and elsewhere around the country have served to temper my elation and confirm my hunch that turning this ship around will not be easy. Other bright spots included the thunderous rejection of the ballot measures to restrict reproductive choice in CO and SD, and the resounding defeat of Elizabeth Dole in NC; but they were offset by the retention of Bachmann, the inconclusive result of the Franken-Barkley-Coleman slugfest, and the success of Prop (H)8 and similar measure in CA and elsewhere.

Tomorrow I will be driving out to Granite Falls in western MN to observe an election audit as a volunteer for the group Citizens for Election Integrity MN (www.ceimn.org). This audit is conducted as part of a MN law that took effect in 2006 which mandates that the ballots for 2-3% of MN precincts (at least 2 per county, more in the more populous ones), and is different from the recount that will start in a couple of weeks (though that certainly gives the audits more scrutiny). Whatever happens, I will take pride in participating in the process and making sure the results are accurate.
