I read this article on TheRegister today:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/06/07/manchester_honours_turing/

It's about Alan Turing, the brilliant scientist who was instrumental in breaking the German Enigma codes during WWII. He was a hero during the War, but as soon as it was over they revoked his security clearance, and he was persecuted. Why? Because he was gay.

He was charged with homosexuality and forced to undergo oestrogen injections to control his libido. Sick to think people once did that to people for being gay. He finally took his life in 1954 by eating an apple laced with cyanide.

Finally, the city of Manchester is dedicating a plaque to him. Thank god the world has changed.
