From The Theran Ash

Because Theran ash is sometimes used in the making of concrete, unexpected treasures that don't come from Akrotiri occasionally turn up on Santorini.

Case in point, this amazing impression of olive leaves preserved between layers of volcanic ash.

Theran ash was an ingredient in the concrete used to construct the Suez Canal.  During the mining of this ash in the early years of the last century, workers apparently found an intact tomb.  Unfortunately, they stole the gold objects and disposed of the human remains, a loss for archaeology because Minoan burials are rare, and the bones could have told us much about the quality of life on Santorini before the Minoan eruption.

To my knowledge, only one gold object has ever been found in the Theran ash, this lovely gold ibex:

thera, artwork, archaeology, minoans
