6. Least favourite words

Oh gosh, this is a difficult one. I like words. There really aren't many words that cause me pain - but here are a very small few, which took me ages to think of, apart from the first one ( Read more... )

When I was a child - a long time ago - "shut up" was banned in our household - but absolutely acceptable almost everywhere else that i went
"Stupid" was also banned - ditto ditto
never erd of mushy peas until many years later

"retard"

Um - not sure - remember:
1) "slow learning" - must never say "retarded"
2) it being explained (circa 1958) that spastic meant a very particular condition, and must never be used otherwise, and most definitely not the same thing as slow learning

Agreed on most of these. Except va-jay-jay, because that's a Grey's Anatomy word for me and therefore makes me giggle.

I have yet to find anyone else who understands my fury at the use of the words 'special' or 'retard' as an insult, so I'm glad to see I'm not the only one :)

I absolutely loathe 'retard' in particular, and jump on it if I hear it used by students at work.
