I'm waging war on the dining room again today. I did a bit yesterday but there is still more to do. It's a good job I'm not spider-phobic because we had cobwebs and spiders EVERYWHERE! We have rather fewer now but I'm a bit grubby and dusty! *grin*
I've moved a couple of things round to create more usable space, and pulled the table out a bit so that chairs fit down the side of it, opposite the pew, rather than the table being up against the mantlepiece. That makes the walking-through space between the table and the piano a bit less, but seeing as we didn't use it for anything other than walking through anyway, it isn't lost space, and there's still room to sit at the piano and play it.
Now the floor and furniture is sorted, I'm having a cup of tea, and then I will be focussing my attention on three cluttersome areas - the top of my bureau (not the desk, that's actually tidy at the moment, but the actual top which serves as a bookshelf type area), the top of the piano, and the art cupboard.
I am determined to make the dining room a really nice place to be, homely and welcoming rather than cluttered, grubby and cobwebby. And the hope (probably a vain hope but never mind) is that the children will follow my example and try to make their own living spaces a bit nicer to be in.
Talking of the two smaller children's bedrooms, there is going to be MAJOR decluttering in them when they have gone back to school. They have FAR too much stuff and never actually do anything with any of it. I wish I was exaggerating, but it is the actual truth. We are talking round vague ideas for changing bedrooms and things again, but nothing will happen for a while. In the meantime I will try to make life easier for them by removing some of the unused stuff. As Flylady is very fond of saying - 'You can't organise clutter!' Yes indeed.
