so recently figured out that a movie i bought in china and watched last fall with
sarbear80 (english title: the ghost 3) was actually a remake. a horrible, horrible, horrible remake:) but at least it makes more sense now. the movie began as a korean movie called
the quiet family. it was then remade in japan by acclaimed director takashi miike as
the happiness of the katakuris.
this is not the type of movie one would ever ever expect to see all over like this. it's the story of a family who opens a guest house/hotel. business is slow at first, and once guests start arriving, they start dying. not due to anything dealing with the family or hotel, but for unrelated reasons. the family decides to cover it up and... well, you know:) wackiness (asian wackiness) ensues. the original verson is this story, pretty straight up, as i gather. the japanese remake turns it into (are you ready for this?) a musical comedy. they even throw in claymation for a few scenes. the chinese version i have looks like it was made for about $500 in two days. it's weird. i need to watch it again now that i have a clue as to what they're trying to do. anyway, that was my big discovery of the weekend.
