although i already knew about this, it still strikes me everytime one of my girls who's wearing a tank top raises her arm and reveals a never-shaved armpit. different.
i had my grossest food experience to this point so far last night. it was at a restaurant where we eat often. often eat. it was just daniel and i, and we had ordered just two dishes, one of them cold beef strips soaked in soy sauce. it's a really tasty dish.
but last night, we were happily eating along when one of us noticed something strange. so, the meat had this strip of fat along one side. and then, we saw on one side of some of the fat, a strip of skin, complete with black bristley hair. there was fricking cow skin and hair still attached to our food. that pretty effectively killed our appetites:) i'm not a squeamish eater, usually, but that caught me by surprise. and it gave daniel a bad dream last night:) so yeah, it was gross:)
wanna play along with class this week? let's compare western ideals with chinese ideals for a minute, if you'll play along.
i have my students brainstorm qualities they think are important in a good friend, then rate the qualities, one to fifteen. below, i've listed fifteen commonly listed qualities. some of these might sound kind of alike, or seem hard to compare because they're so different, but.... you know:) i'm giving you what they gave themselves.
Poll qualities of good friends i've had four of my six classes so far, and i only remembered to write down the results in three of the classes:) after we brainstormed, i had them rate the qualities individually, then get into groups of four and talk it out till they could agree on an order. then i had each group tell me their top and bottom three. we looked to see which qualities had the most high ratings, the most low ones, then i asked if anyone wanted to try to convince their classmates that some of the ratings were wrong, a few people would stand and state their case, we'd vote again, and these are the results.
two of those classes put honest as number one. the third class put honest as second.

if you want to continue to do what my students are doing this week, you can comment and answer this question. in two days, everyone on earth will die. a spaceship comes and aliens say they have room to take 12 people to a new planet that's just like earth, but with no people. you've been put on a selection committee to decide on these 12 people. who do you pick? specify age, sex, nationality, and occupation of the people, as well as other details you think are important. listening to the students discuss this all week and listening to their answers has been really thought-provoking.
