Recently, my biology class did an experiment on seeds. IT WAS FUN!!! Well...kind of, because you know how experiments can be fun but the process later, such as writing the lab report and etc. is so boring, sometimes even frustrating. But anyways, I'm not here to talk about the boring part, but the FUN PART!!! Yay...
So for our experiment (I worked with another friend), we decided to choose the topic on the colors of light and their effects on the growth of plants (this experiment was on seeds; everyone had to do this). Of course my hypothesis was the one that receives direct sunlight (wasn't covered with any plastic bags) would grow the best. I mean, I haven't done any research beforehand yet, so I would obviously think that with my common sense; I thought a plant that was covered with plastic bags won't even get any sunlight...maybe just a little, but definitely less than the non-covered one. Therefore, I thought this idea was stupid (no offense to my partner, and of course I didn't say that out loud).
We chose 48 seeds, 16 for each group (the math's correct?), and there were three groups. Then, we put a blue colored plastic bag over one group and a green colored plastic bag over another group. The last group was not covered. We left them on the table outside the room for five days, measuring for their change in height every day.
The result was rather surprising. It was actually the group of beans that were covered with the green plastic bag that grew the most! The group that was covered the the blue bag came second, and the one that wasn't covered grew the least. IT WAS THE TOTAL OPPOSITE OF WHAT I EXPECTED!!! This experiment was actually really cool. :)
A lot of other groups were doing the experiment using different acid level. With what I saw, it was quite disgusting. Some of them grew white fungi on them, some actually grew a bit of embryo (the future stem where leaves will sprout out). There was another experiment that was really interesting, too. The student put one group of seeds into a box with no light and left another group outside. The result is the opposite of what you might think; the group in the box grew the most!!! Cool, right?
P.S. We had to dump the plants afterwards out the window...Hope they grew well after...falling out a two story high window. Also, they were beginning to mold and smell weird. The
