Another walk through the woods

The weather was iffy today and the car had to go into the garage for its MOT and service. Therefore I planned a shortish walk that started from home. There was heavy rain early on, but as the weather forecast had predicted, it stopped around 9.30 a.m., so we set off promptly. The first part was the same as the Pandy Woods walk we did a little while ago, but instead of heading straight up through the woods we took the path that contoured around the hill.

Well, it ran fairly level at first, but then had to climb steeply to reach the top of a deep narrow valley with a stream running in the bottom. I didn't take many pictures this time because the sky was overcast and the light was flat. Also the path was so steep in a few places that I kept the camera in my bag so I had both hands free.

Here is where I paused for a moment to look back. The point where the trees changed from native broad leaves to tall conifers.

And here is the path looking on upwards.

The path was mostly well trodden and easy to find, though there was one bit where it seemed to peter out, but just as we were trying to decide where it went next, a man came cheerfully along with a golden retriever, so as we watched him approach, that showed where we had to go next.

The path wended its way through the woods, through a small ford with stepping stones.

I had forgotten to bring my walking pole and the big stones looked a bit slippery, so we mostly avoided them and splashed through the shallow bits.

And then, after emerging briefly onto a tarmac lane at a point I suddenly recognised, we turned off again to the right along a bridleway. The track now led over open, well kept fields, more like parkland than our typical rough pasture, though it was dotted with the usual complement of sheep.

There were lovely open views from here, but see above about grey flat light, and there were no obvious subjects for photography. The track eventually led to a house, then another footpath wound up through more trees to finally reach a narrow lane with grass growing down the middle. We passed a few isolated houses and then a caravan site before finally reaching the tarmac road that lead straight back down into town. The name of the road is Fron Serth (lit. Steep Breast, i.e. steep breast of the hill). But it's only relatively steep, being an actual road for actual cars, and not as steep as some of the paths we'd climbed coming up through the woods. (Total distance a smidgin over 4 miles.)
