It's not necessarily that the whole fandom is comprised of that many stupid people, I don't think. Most people who are YGO fans probably just watch the show or play the card game and don't even bother interacting with other people on the internet or at conventions. (I guess you'd call those "casual fans".) Rather, it's most likely that the dumbest fans are the most vocal and therefore the ones that people are most likely to remember and associate with the fandom as a whole. It's an unfortunate side-effect of large groups. The more people in the group, the more dumbasses there will be to fuck shit up for everybody else. A highschool teacher of mine called this the 10% Rule. Ten percent of the whole population are fucking morons that will continually ruin things for the other ninety percent.

A real-life example would be how the Tea Party makes even slightly conservative people everywhere look like flaming douchetards. Or how people like Fred Phelps and Osama bin Laden make the whole of mainstream monotheism look like a bunch homophobic, xenophobic, woman-hating terrorists. Which we all know isn't true.
