Totemo isogashii desu ne...

Yesterday I went with Heather to the Saturday Market, and we also went over to Powell's (which has become a tradition for me; I go there every time I'm in Portland now). I got the 2nd Naruto manga (in Japanese), which has been very cute and relatively easy to read, even if it does take me forever.

I hung around Pioneer Place after that, and realized what an incredibly boring mall that is, especially since they keep replacing all the regular stores with really ritzy clothes and jewelery shops. Plus, there's only one bookstore in the entire building, and it's a ridiculously small Borders. Eventually Chris arrived, and then we went to hear the Oregon Symphony.

They played Mahler, who I hadn't heard much of before then. I've discovered that I don't really like him much; his music is definitely schiznophrenic like people say, but without the passion that I was expecting. Maybe it's just me, but I didn't really feel moved by it the way I have by other composers. It was the 5th symphony, which opens with a funeral march; the march begins with a trumpet fanfare, of all things, and as a Chopin fan, that just did not go over well with me.

However, it wasn't a total loss, as they played Ligeti's Atmospheres, which was really incredible. The best way I can describe it is harmonic discordance- I loved it. It was quiet and eerie, like the kind of thing you'd hear in a well done horror movie.

Of course, I made up for all of the running around yesterday by doing absolutely nothing whatsoever today. It was wonderful- all in all a grand sucess of a Sunday.
