Communication and respect are the two most important things that can be had in a relationship.
This goes double, nay TRIPLE for long-distance relationships!

But if there's no communication, if there's no respect...
Whatever you have isn't love. It's some warped shell posing as love

Holy shit, YES. This a billion times. There was a complete communication breakdown between my wife and I and there was a complete lack of respect from her and it just couldn't work. I was holding on to a shell of a relationship; it was like trying to put a band-aid on a tumor.

Communication, honest communication, is important in any relationship, but even more so in a LDR because communication is oftentimes all one has, and if you can be honest while apart, how can someone be honest together? Communication, even just a small thing every day, is like reaching out and touching and connecting.

And respect, viewing your partner as an equal, is the bedrock that this foundation is built upon.

You and I didn't work out, but I can definitely say that you provided honesty and respect. You valued me as an equal and as a person. You helped me feel respected not just as a partner but a person. When things weren't working out for you w/r/t a relationship, well, you had the presence of mind in recognizing this and the respect for us both in ending things amicably instead of letting our relationship get worse. Respect.
