“And what in the world do you think you are doing?”
Yabu jumped. He spun around, and saw Takaki looking at him strangely, his hands on his hips, with fringe pinned up with a strawberry clip.
“What’s with that clip? Your sister gave it to you or something-“
“That’s not the problem,” Takaki retorted. “The problem is that apparently you seem to be listening to Inoo and Hikaru’s conversation inside the room. And what do you think of that?”
Yabu looked at his fingers awkwardly.
Takaki sighed. “Oh, I know what’s going on already.”
Yabu looked at him doubtfully.
“You like Inoo don’t you, stupid.”
Yabu waved his arms at him and shook his head violently. “What?! Whoever said that must be insane, I mean how could I like Inoo, he’s so pretty and gentle and kind and cute but that doesn’t mean that I like him right well okay so maybe I do like him a litt-“
He covered his mouth with his hands.
Takaki shook his head at him. “You’re a little easy to decipher, Yabu Kota. Come with me young man, you have some explaining to do.”
And with that, he pulled Yabu by his hands and dragged him to the cafe in the Jimusho.

“Hikaru and Inoo are going to break up? Why?” Takaki put down his juice and looked at Yabu in surprise. Hikaru and Inoo were one of those couples that he knew that were loving, caring and absolutely perfect for each other. Takaki simply didn’t see any reason why they should be breaking up.
“Because Hikaru fell for Taiyo again.”
“Oh.”
Takaki understood. Hikaru and Taiyo were once a couple when they were still juniors. But things changed after the formation of the new group, and Hikaru’s debut.
“But why, Taiyo? We can still be together-“
“I’m sorry, Hikaru, I can’t go on anymore, I really can’t. I’m so sorry.”

Yabu cast a glance at Inoo, who was silently doing his math homework on the table in the dressing room. The 7 members were having their turn at the photo shoot for the month, and the BEST were waiting for their turn. Hikaru was nowhere to be found, and Daiki and Takaki were playing their Nintendo DS.
“That’s not the way, you should play like this-“
“No really, THIS is the correct way! You won’t get to it like this-“
The conversation sounded like some kind of debate between the two of them.
Yabu walked over to the table Inoo was at, and sat on the chair opposite of him. Inoo, sensing Yabu’s presence, looked up at him and smiled, and then continued to do his homework.
“What brings you here?”
I just wanted to talk to you.
“Well, nothing much really. Just bored.”
Inoo nodded slowly, not really focusing on their conversation but more on his math homework.
“So how have you been recently?”
Inoo looked up at him, and for a moment, Yabu thought that he saw this depth of sadness in his eyes, but it was gone as quickly as it had come. Inoo smiled at him.
“Fine! Schoolwork is getting heavier, though. Very tiring sometimes but I’m coping pretty okay.” Inoo looked down at his homework again, blinking a little too many times.
Yabu didn’t know what to say. He simply smiled at Inoo, nodded and left the table.

He stood at the open rooftop of the Jimusho. The sun was warm, but the wind was chill. He stared at the sky, looking at the sequence of the clouds, admiring the abundant sunshine. He stretched, took off his jacket and threw them on the floor. He then lied down, and with his hands behind his head, he closed his eyes.
He felt sad. Not for himself, not for the fact that he couldn’t be with Inoo. Yabu knew that he could feel sad and whine to Takaki about Inoo not liking him, but he also knew that he had no right to feel sad over that. He didn’t.
Instead, he felt sad for Inoo. Because Inoo was unable to be with Hikaru. But he had every right to feel sad over it.
Yabu wiped away a tear that rolled down his face.
The sun continued to shine.
--------------------------------------------------
The photo shoot had taken much longer than he had expected, and Yabu was tired out by the time they ended. He was sick of smiling and making peace signs for the camera, sick of having to pretend that he was happy all the time.
He walked back slowly to the dressing room, feeling unnecessarily annoyed. He kicked a stray can away frustratingly, only to pick it up and throw it into the nearest dustbin.
By the time he reached the dressing room, he thought that everyone had already left. But there was still one person left.
Inoo?
He squinted. The lights were off, but he could see Inoo’s silhouette under the reflected moonlight. He was sitting on the sofa, crouched over, his face in his hands.
Yabu so badly wanted to go over, he really did. He wanted to go over and hug Inoo tightly, tell him that it was all right, that he was here for him, that he didn’t need to worry anymore. But he couldn’t, he just couldn’t. He really couldn’t.
Because he didn't have the right to do so.
