“The family is a haven in a heartless world.”
“Donovan.”
Grace looked up at her husband from where she was leaning against him on the bed, and gave him a small, amused smile. “Donovan?”
“Yeah. Like Donovan McNabb.”
She should have seen that one coming. This was her husband after all-the one who wore black when McNabb got traded from the Eagles, and still wore the Eagles McNabb jersey when he watched the games. Were it any other debate, she would have been too tired to argue, but this was a rather important conversation, and she wasn’t about to check out on it quite yet.
“I do like the name Donavan,” she said with a nod, tipping her chin up with an amused smirk. “However, she is a girl, Jake.”
Jake looked down at the small bundle of pink in his arms, a wide grin on his face that hadn’t faded since the first time the nurse put her in his arms. “Yeah she is,” he whispered, moving one finger so that she could wrap her little hand around it. “So?”
“So we can’t name her Donavan,” she sighed softly. “She’ll get crucified on MySpace.”
“My what?”
“Never mind,” she sighed. “But anyway. I’m vetoing Donavan. Let’s give her a girly name, okay?”
Jake considered that for a minute, before looking back over at her with a smirk. “Donovana?”
She smacked him on the shoulder lightly, before shifting so that she was leaning into him again. She was tired, so, so tired, but she wasn’t going to sleep until her little girl had a name, one that both her parents could agree on. “Seriously, Jake.”
“I know, Gracie,” he smirked, before shifting so that he was leaning against the bed with her more. “What about something simple? Like Mary?”
“Mary?”
“Means ‘star of the sea.’”
She should have known that getting him that baby name book was a bad idea. She smirked a bit, before resting her head against his shoulder, reaching to take their daughter’s other hand. “I don’t know. It still doesn’t seem quite right.”
“We could go with a variation? Maria, Maureen, Marie … ”
“Wait!” she said, stopping him before he could head on to the next. “Marie. I like Marie.”
“Okay,” he nodded. “What about a middle name?”
“Elizabeth, maybe?” she asked, brushing her thumb over her daughter’s knuckles. “Marie Elizabeth O’Dell.”
He smiled at her, before nodding. “I like it.”
“Good,” she sighed, closing her eyes, and letting her hand drop a bit. She stirred a bit when she felt Jake shift next to her, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.
“You did so good, sweetheart. She’s perfect.”
And she was. Grace wasn’t even going to bother denying that. “Mmmm,” she sighed softly. “Love you.”
“Love you too.”
