“I think you're a realist masquerading as a cynic who is secretly an optimist.”
Grace wasn’t an idiot, and she didn’t wear rose colored glasses. In fact, while she liked looking up, she usually saw everything put in front of her, and she certainly wasn’t anywhere in the vicinity of blind when it came to her sister. She knew Felicity, better than the girl probably would like, which is why when Aaron swung into town, and Felicity’s face seemed to light up a bit with the mere mention of his name, she knew they were headed for trouble.
It wasn’t that she didn’t like Aaron. It really wasn’t. He was a good guy-for the most part-and he was Jake’s best friend. If he was a good enough guy for Jake to get along with, then he was good enough for her to do the same. However, that did not mean he was good enough to be sleeping with her sister. Felicity was the type to get blind to certain things when she was happy, and Grace didn’t want to have anything shattering that illusion quite yet. There was baggage there-she could tell that just by looking at him, and from what her fiancé was saying, it was the type of baggage that was likely to get her sister hurt.
“You slept with him.”
Felicity’s eyes flashed before she raised an eyebrow in her sister’s direction. “Gonna have to be a little more specific if you’re looking for a certain kind of reaction, Gracie.”
Grace’s eyes narrowed as she picked up the cheeseburger in front of her. “Aaron, Felicity. I’m talking about Aaron.”
Felicity looked at her for a moment, before rolling her eyes. “I’m allowed to sleep with whoever I want. I’m an adult, ya know.”
“Yeah, but-I know you, Lissie. I know how you think. And I know how you are with boys, and-”
“Grace. We’re just messing around.” Felicity crossed her legs in front of her as she leaned back in her seat. “I’ve screwed around before with guys like him and you’ve never pitched a fit before.”
“Yeah, but they’ve never been my fiancé’s best friend before,” Grace pointed out. “Something that could cause me serious problems in the long run if he hurts you or vice versa.”
“Look, we’re just having some fun,” Felicity sighed. “No harm, no foul, we’re not looking to get serious. Especially-” There was a long pause and Felicity ran a hand through her hair and shook her head. “-not now, anyway. I just want some no strings attached fun, okay?”
“I know you,” Grace repeated. “You can’t do no strings attached because even if you’re not looking to form them, those strings’ll get there all on their own.” She paused for a second, before closing her eyes and leaning back in the seat. “Just-promise me you’ll end things with Aaron if you feel like you’re getting in too far over your head, alright?”
“Fine,” Felicity nodded, her fingers tapping against the table for a moment before she continued. “Speaking of-that. He’s not coming to the wedding, right?”
Grace watched her sister for a moment, before shaking her head. “I can’t control the engagement party, though.”
“So that means I have to talk to-”
“Mom.”
“Shit.”
“She’ll understand, Felicity.”
“Yeah, but that doesn’t mean I actually want to have to explain it.” Felicity sighed slightly, before slumping slightly in her seat. “But I’ll talk to her.”
“It wasn’t your fault, alright? Just remember that.”
“Sure doesn’t feel that way.” There was a bit of a silence before Felicity swallowed, a happier look crossing her face again. “So-I think we should get back to shopping, don’t you?”
“Yeah,” Grace sighed with a bit of a smile, before gathering up her trash to toss. “Let’s shop away.”
