[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]

Name: Günter von Kleist
Age: Exact age unknown, at least about 150. Appears to be in his mid-thirties.
Gender: Male
Fandom: Kyou Kara Maou (anime/OVA, with some characterization based on the novels.)
Timeline: Post-series 2 and the OVAs.
History: Günter’s wiki page, and another one, anime synopsis.
Unfortunately, Günter’s back story has not been dealt with yet in either the anime or the original novels, and so really not much is known about him and his life from prior to the beginning of the series.

Character Personality:
Günter von Kleist is a ridiculously difficult character to pin-point a personality with, mainly because he falls into the category of characters who wear a mask, but what goes on beneath that mask is a mystery. And unfortunately, as it stands, we have yet to learn the answer to the question (assuming we ever will.) None of the three canons for Kyou Kara Maou has yet to explore Günter’s backstory or give us a really good, clear insight into his mind. Mostly, in order to get a hold on his voice, you have to take the tiny glimpses at his true persona, which are few and far between, and try your best to fill in the gaps.

Because outwardly, Günter is an incredibly happy person. He’s excitable and loud. He’s a classic fangirl in an older man’s body, basically. Literally, he spends most of his time fawning over Yuuri, to the point where he has burst out in terrible nosebleeds over the poor boy. Günter’s mainly used as the comic relief character in the series, so it’s no big surprise. And he plays his role quite well. His loud outbursts, his wails, and his theatrics all make for good entertainment. But there’s much more to Günter than meets the eye. Günter is the one that teaches Yuuri, and he’s smart. Apart from Murata, Günter’s arguably the most knowledgeable person of the main cast. And that’s what he’s most known for, really, his smarts. He, along with Gwendal, are the ones that more or less run Shin Makoku, as Yuuri is still learning and hasn’t really stepped up to the plate quite to handle things without them. When Günter needs to be serious, he is, completely. You’d hardly recognize him as the same overly-exuberant man who fawns over Yuuri. He takes his job with great seriousness, and the safety of the demon kingdom is of utmost importance to him. He’s also deeply loyal, willing to go to any lengths for his king, country, and those he cares about.

But Günter has more than just brains. He’s also a skilled swordsman, having taught Conrart (who is widely recognized as the greatest swordsman in Shin Makoku) everything he knows. Yet Günter is, even then, still a teacher more than anything else. He didn’t fight in the war that Conrart did, and it’s hard to say if he did before then. Conrart suggests at one point that though Günter is skilled with the sword, he’s never actually been on a battlefield, and yet when the two battle, Günter injures Conrart with surprising ease, and he doesn’t seem deterred by Conrart’s comments, which suggest he either has fought in some kind of war or maybe some kind of civil dispute or something. Whenever or whenever it happened, we don’t know, but it’s pretty easy to deduce from that scene that Günter does indeed have blood on his hands.

He never seems to want to talk about his past, suggesting he has something to hide or that it’s very painful. And despite being such an outwardly happy and flamboyant person, Günter shows very little love and tenderness towards his own daughter, Gisela. One of the audio dramas suggests that Günter only adopted her because his mother pushed him into it, so that he could have someone to take his seat amongst the noble families one day. In the novels, Yuuri sees Günter’s soul, and it’s described as creepy and disgusting, and Yuuri is completely taken aback by how un- Günter-like his soul is and can’t figure out how such a disgusting soul could belong to Günter.

It should also be noted that Günter’s magical element is air. While generally treated as being a calm, gentle power, therefore reflecting his nature, one must always remember, that while air can mean a gentle breeze, it can just as easily bring forth a hurricane.

Frankly it’s all quite strange, and I’m desperately looking forward to the day when the novelist decides to finally divulge more information on Günter to us (since the anime never will, even if it is continued.) But as it stands, there isn’t much, and this is really all I can do to put it into words.

Character Abilities:
Günter has mad sword skills. He’s also fiercely intelligent. On the magic front, he’s controls the element of air.

Character Weaknesses:
Mainly Yuuri and anything to do with Yuuri. Gisela to a lesser extent, and really anyone he deeply cares about, but nowhere near as much as Yuuri. YUURI IS HIS GREATEST DOWNFALL. And Shin Makoku in general, really. His sense of patriotism is great.

[ MEISTER SECTION ]

Why your character should be a Meister:
Günter is a warrior, or was, at any rate. He’s trained in combat and taught Conrart in the ways of battle, so it seems to make the most sense that he’d be a meister here. It’s more familiar territory for him, and even though he’s not much of a fighter anymore during the present time of the series, we know from a few instances that when necessary, he can still whip out a can of kick-ass.

[ SOUL INFORMATION ]

Soul Description:
Cold, distant, pensive, fierce, formidable, caring.

Soul Appearance:
Günter’s soul would be medium sized, without many features and of a light lilac color. Mostly it would wear a passive face, one that was unreadable to anyone who could see it, but he’s angry or the situation becomes serious, it grows and becomes very dark and angry and foreboding. Generally, you don’t want to see his soul like that. Ever. If you do, you’re probably screwed. Big time.

[ SAMPLES ]

First Person:
[The video feed turns on, and immediately you can see a man with ridiculously long silverish-lilac hair turning the device over and over in his hands, frowning, impatient. He mutters to himself, sounding quite irritated at not understanding what in the world this thing is, but if you listen carefully you can hear what he’s saying.]

What kind of game is this…? This is unlike any place in Shin Makoku… What… what kind of strange new world have I been dragged to? This contraption! What is this supposed to be, it looks like one of Anissina’s inventions…!

Or perhaps something from His Majesty’s world… Oh, Your Majesty! Where are you when I need you?!

[Without realizing it, Günter flips the feed over to voice only, and carries on mumbling. Feel free to point and laugh at his expense.]

Third Person:
It was another one of those days. His Majesty was gone, returned to his own strange world, although this time he’d taken Conrart and Wolfram with him. Günter was none too pleased with this development, of course. Why couldn’t His Majesty ever take Günter along?!

Although it did make sense, logically, Günter reasoned as he sorted through a number of books he hadn’t read in some time but had been meaning to pull from his shelf for Yuuri to read over when he returned. For the most part, up until now, Günter had been shoveling as much history as he could down Yuuri’s unwilling throat, but in hindsight, it probably was a better idea to teach the young king more about various customs and holidays in Shin Makoku, so that another incident like the one with von Bielefeld didn’t happen again. …Not that Günter had completely neglected to teach His Majesty the customs of their people, not at all. But Yuuri was, well… He was certainly the most challenging student Günter had ever had. And considering Conrart had once been his student, that was quite an accomplishment.

Günter piled the books he’d gathered on his desk and sat down with a sigh. For a moment he thought it might be a good idea to go check and see if Gwendal had any paper work he wanted to hand over to him to do instead, but decided against it. Gwendal could handle it himself- and besides that, Günter could have sworn he heard Anissina pass by his office no less than ten minutes ago on a frantic search for Gwendal. He was in no great rush to get caught up in another one of her experiments, and she usually only roped him into them if he happened to be in Gwendal’s immediate vicinity when she captured him. So Günter had no plans to move from this room for some time.

He ran a hand through his hair and glanced around to see if he had anything that needed his immediate attention. Nothing that he felt particularly motivated to do, and several things he needed His Majesty for. He sighed again and leaned back in his chair, folding his hands neatly on his stomach. It was always like this when Yuuri was away. Normally there was always something that needed to be done, something that needed his immediate attention. But with Wolfram and Conrart both gone as well, it was… unnaturally quiet. Calm. On the one hand he quite liked it. It was relaxing, and he hadn’t had a proper breather in ages, it felt like. On the other hand, it was just too weird.

Günter glanced towards the window and the thought crossed his mind, briefly, to go and see Gisela, but that, too, he decided against. He didn’t have anything to really say to her, and he didn’t know how she’d react to him just randomly coming to visit her. And she was busy with her own work and duties, anyway. He didn’t want to distract her from that. And Greta was with Lady Cheri for the day, and Shinou only knew what they were getting up to. Günter shook his head, and turned back to the books he’d piled on to his desk. Well, if he was going to give them to His Majesty to read, he figured, he might as well review them first. He knew them all by heart, but still, a brush-up was never bad, and it gave him something half-way productive to do, so he picked up the book on top and cracked it open to begin his ‘work.’
