Katherine Heigl’s Own Life In ‘Life As We Know It’

Katherine Heigl’s personal and professional lives collided while making her new romantic comedy “Life as We Know It.”

“I literally became a mother four days before filming began so the whole process of filming and my personal life it’s all on camera,” the actress, who adopted her daughter Naleigh with husband Josh Kelley in September 2009, told Access Hollywood Thursday night at the film’s New York premiere.

“I couldn’t get (a chance) to set (up) and sort of divorce myself in order to become someone… I really couldn’t even attempt it because it was so… my brain was in 14,000 places at once, and so what you see is what you get with me,” she continued.

The 31-year-old actress told Access this movie, which co-stars Josh Duhamel, holds a special place in her long list of credits.

“I’m really proud of this movie. It’s probably my favorite film I’ve done to date,” she explained. “It’s just the perfect combination of romance and comedy and heart. I think people want a real story these days, the fantasy, the wish fulfillment is fun and I always love those movies and hope to always get to do them… it was grounded in a lot of humanity, these people are real people.”

“Life as We Know It” hits theaters on October 8.

Josh Duhamel Finds the 'Movie [He's] Been Looking For'

We chased down Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel at the 'Life as We Know It' premiere in New York City.

"This is the kind of movie I've been looking for," Duhamel told us Thursday night.

In the romantic comedy, Duhamel and Heigl take on the responsibility of raising their goddaughter, Sophie. They both love Sophie, but there's one problem - they can't stand each other. The family is forced to get along for the sake of the child.

Katherine has a daughter of her own in real life. The actress told us that although she has had a blast being in New York, her daughter doesn't seem to be impressed by the festivities of the night.

"She's a little blasé about it, I suppose," said Katherine. "She so used to it at this point - it's so funny."

Big Apple Gets To See "Life As We Know It"
By George Whipple

The world premiere of "Life As We Know It" was recently held at the Ziegfeld Theatre in Midtown. The movie is about a couple, played by Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel, who go on a horrible first date and then inherit joint custody of a baby.

Heigl says being a mother in real life has changed her own life.

“Suddenly it becomes this crazy reality. It's changed it in every way," says Heigl. "It's given it a perspective I didn't have before, which is what I was hopeful for when I wanted to become a mom and wanted to start a family. I wanted my life to sort of have more significance."

In real life, Heigl is married to musician Josh Kelley, who says that fatherhood changed his life for the better.

“Everything I do now, I make sure it's for the family and for my kid," says Kelley. "You know, you start making time for what you want, and what I want is, you know, a happy family."

Director Greg Berlanti says it was virtually a baby boom on the set.

“There's triplets in the film -- they keep everybody on their toes," he says. "You never know, everyone's on edge and they're screaming and crying one minute and then they're happy the next and they don't remember why."

Josh Lucas, who is the third leg of the love triangle, respects the babies' professionalism.

“There were lots of babies, there were stunt babies, honestly!" says Lucas. "One day, I was in my trailer and a baby came in and I was like, 'Oh, it's Samantha!' And they're like, 'No, it's Brooke.' And I was like, 'Which baby is this?' And they're like, 'This isn't one of the triplets - this is a stunt baby.'"

Heigl's love interest on the big screen, Josh Duhamel, rejects the old acting adage that you should never work with babies.

“I think every movie should have kids," says Duhamel. "It lightens the mood, when you got the cameraman and all the sound guys behind the camera trying to get the baby to stop crying, singing 'You Are My Sunshine.' What's better than that?"

Katherine Heigl On 'Grey's Anatomy': 'That Chapter Is Closed'
'Life As We Know It' star tells MTV News return would 'just feel manipulative.'
By Jocelyn Vena
Oct 1 2010

Fans of "Grey's Anatomy" said goodbye to Izzie in January, but that doesn't mean viewers and gossip-mongers don't wonder if Katherine Heigl could ever make a return to Seattle Grace, after leaving her life and her love, Alex, behind. But, at Thursday night's "Life As We Know It" premiere in New York City, Heigl seemed pretty sure that the prognosis for a return to "Grey's Anatomy" looked bleak. And, she had a good reason for saying so.

"That chapter is closed, and it's sad," she dished to MTV News. "And it's hard."

So, why not try to explore Izzie a bit further? Well, as Heigl explained, she didn't want any plots involving her return to come off as calculated. It just wouldn't feel organic for the actress, whose new movie, "Life As We Know It," co-starring Josh Duhamel, opens October 8.

"I can't think of any way that she could come back gracefully that wouldn't just feel manipulative," she explained. "And, it's hard, because I really wonder what she's doing and where she is and what happened, but that is over for me now."

Despite rumors of her diva-like ways on set, Heigl appears to hold the project close to her heart, even though she's left it behind to pursue big-screen projects. Earlier this year, she shared that she did miss the people she used to work with on the soapy medical drama.

"I really miss that relationship," Heigl said of her former onscreen romance with Alex (played by Justin Chambers). "Justin Chambers is one of the most amazing men, and certainly a spectacular actor. I feel oddly attached to him, and the character and my character being together. It just seems what's supposed to be, but you can't have it all."
