LOST IN TRANSLATION
When I was eight, my mom taught me German. Since she and my dad both went to college (and met and married) in Germany, she wanted at least one of her children to speak that language. She said I was a natural linguist and picked it up instantly. In high school, I took 2 years of French and 2 years of Spanish, and another year of French in college. Last year, a month before our trip to Rome, I learned Italian, and boned up on my French for our trip to France last March.
Now whenever we travel, I am the designated communicator, primarily because everyone else is too lazy and/or frustrated with learning foreign languages. In Italy, we took the train from Rome to Florence and drove a rental car in Tuscany. Last summer in Costa Rica, we drove from San Jose to La Fortuna to Jaco and Manuel Antonio, to Atenas and back to San Jose. And last March, we drove from Geneva to the Swiss Alps in Switzerland, and from Nice to Monaco to St. Tropez to Lyon to Dijon and up to Paris. All that driving meant we got lost oh about 20 times and lord knows where we would be today if none of us spoke the local language.
I don't mind, of course, because I have always been fascinated with foreign languages, and of course cultures and cuisines!
What's interesting is that, for the life of me, I can't seem to keep up with Tagalog, the Filipino language. Slang, really, but since languages evolve and mutate and transform, I call everything Tagalog

OK, to the Manila-based LJers, what the heck does EVER/EVAR mean?
