You all probably think I'm some sort of working class reverse snob with all my snark against those who want to be "uppity" in the hobby. Not true! I love to be a pretty, pretty princess, but alas! I am (a) practical at heart and (b) terrified to cut lovely pretty silk because I fear ruining it with a bad cut. This is ludicrous, I know, because piecing is period, but it's still a genuine fear of mine. In fact, the handful of period materials I did keep are silks, because I want them for my pretty outfits and don't want to part with them. BTW, I have decided not to sell my turquoise silk. Jury's still out on the chintz (the chintz has a story). The 8 yards of blue silk and the pair of shoes are gone, having been bought up by
justawench.
In the next two years, I would like to have the following, for "Mrs. J. Davis (Hannah Bond)":
Silk petticoat (3 yards of shot pink and orange silk taffeta). Is there a way to make it for both itself, a bumroll and pocket hoops? Or should I forgo that all together? I seem to remember something somewhere--maybe Koshka or American Duchess....
Fancy cotton print anglaise (If I keep half the chintz)
Cream taffeta Polonaise or Anglaise (5 yards of 40" heavy silk)
Turquoise quilted petticoat (probably the swagged example in 18th Century Embroidery Techniques)
1775-8 Sacque gown, out of the Strawberries and Cream taffeta I bought from Hallie Larkin at the
Battle of the Hook in 2008.A "Suit of Lace," (tucker, handkerchief, ruffles and apron in matching white-on-white embroidery) I want to do a simple set first, then maybe, before I die work a more complicated set.
Various and sundry items to accessorize and support all the above garments, bumroll, pocket hoops, embroidered pockets, fancy work bags and pincushions, fancy hat, etc.
And, if I do 1810s like I want, it will ALL be pretty, pretty, because I doubt I'll live near any of the battle events or houses. Once I have the proper undies, I'd like to finish my bonnets and make a muslin gown (6 yards white cotton voile) and accessorize accordingly (print day dress, various under petticoats, ballgown, spencer, pelisse, reticules, etc).
Future purchases: silk stockings and nicer shoes from American Duchess. I'm really wanting the Abigails when they come out.
See? I don't hate the pretty! It's just not practical for my life most of the time....
