Sorry I have not written in so long. We’ve been really busy again as always. Again I can’t remember what I wrote before so hopefully I don’t end up repeating myself. I did end up having a cold, which really sucked but it’s almost over and really has been a relatively light cold. I played soccer on Tuesday even though I wasn’t feeling really well from the cold and before the game even started a guy kicked the ball and it smacked into the side of my head really hard. But it wasn’t that hard and I had a lot of fun playing. I just talked to my roommate and we’re going to go watch a game of the soccer world cup somewhere when it starts that should be a lot of fun too. My roommate doesn’t particularly like soccer but there is another girl who wants to go watch it. On Wednesday one of the guys at school had a party and so we went to that. I think I was probably the only one there who wasn’t drinking, and pretty much everyone there was making a big deal about it, which of course kinda made me want to drink which in turn made me really not want to drink. Also almost everyone there got really drunk. I talked to a cute Mexican guy there. And the next day at school most people where hung over but they still managed to make a big deal about me not drinking and it started to make me really upset. It also seems like my class is the class full of the biggest drunks who really do go out pretty much every single night. It is really ridiculous. I’ve never really had to deal with this group of people before because I’ve always found my own set of friends that are not interested in it. I guess I’m not sure what to do with them. I think I do want to change the people in my class because most of them do not seem as interested in studying Spanish as I do, and the class could go a lot faster with people who were interested and actually studied and did their homework. Our host mother has told me and my roommate to talk to someone tomorrow about switching classes. We still haven’t done any other tenses other than present tense and I want to move faster so I will be able to know more. Thursday I really just had a bad day, also one of girls really didn’t seem to understand that I wasn’t feeling well and I wasn’t dealing with all of the crap that people were giving me, but I think she gets it a bit more now. Friday was better we went to the Cathedral in Cuernavaca which was really pretty and to Jardin Borda which is where Maximillian and his wife lived (maybe daddy knows more about who this is?) Anyways the gardens were really pretty and I wandered around by myself and found the cool museum portion that I think everyone else missed. I enjoy the excursions that we go on, but I think lots of the other people really don’t care.
Yesterday (Saturday) we went to Teotihuacan (and I’m too lazy to look up whether I spelled that right, but it’s close) which are more pyramids in Mexico City. These ones were really really tall and obviously more even more touristy than the other ones we went to. I climbed to the top of the second tallest pyramid (the moon pyramid) with a couple of other girls. It really wasn’t as hard to climb up there as I thought it would be. Then I walked through this other part that actually had remains of one of the temples and frescos still remaining, those were pretty cool.
One really weird thing about Mexico is that yellow cheese does not exist. As far as I know about Mexican food in the US, which is really not much, it is usually almost always made with yellow cheese. My roommate mentioned liking broccoli with cheddar cheese on top and our host mom had never had that. So then we were on a mission to find cheddar cheese. We have tried 5 different grocery stores and finally the last one we tried today had cheddar cheese. Going to grocery stores is cool to see the different kinds of stuff that they have. Of course most of it is really similar to US and I think that every grocery store that we have been into except one has been owned by Walmart. Only one of them was actually called walmart, but people still had walmart tags on their shirts and signs said “Siempre bajo precios” (or something like that). Also how much do cinnamon sticks normally cost in the US? Today we tried to go to an internet café, but apparently they are closed on Sundays so that is why we ended up in another grocery store, because we walked all the way down the hill and we didn’t want to do that for nothing.
Today was our first free day where we had nothing planned for us. I slept in all the way to 9:30, which is 2 hours more than I normally get. Then I had a lot of work to do for the social work class because I haven’t really been keeping up with it, because there just hasn’t been time. Truly there is barely any work for this class compared to other normal classes. I just need to enter some journal entries and then we have class this week and that is it. It will be so nice to get out of school at 2:30 instead of 4. Then we will have more time and will only have to focus on learning Spanish. Although we have to make another trip to the orphanage and maybe somewhere else because we are supposed to have so many hours doing that sort of stuff which of course they did not tell us. The social work class has been really disappointing, we’ve only focused on introduction to social work and what it is and how to practice it. Not one thing on what is happening in Mexico, she doesn’t really know much about Mexico, although she has been to Russia a lot.
I’ve been trying to go to bed early, besides Wednesday night, because I’ve been so tired here. Friday night we watched My Big Fat Greek Wedding, one of their DVD’s, which was in English but with Spanish subtitles. So we could listen to it in English and see how they translated it into Spanish, it was interesting. Eventually we’re going to go see a movie here. I forgot on Saturday we also went to a Basilica and to a museum of Frida Kahlo. We got lost on our way to the museum so it took forever to get there, but we saw some of Mexico City. Then we were so hungry on our way back that we had Burger King, the fries tasted really good. Really I’ve been doing really well with Mexican food. Our host mother has not just cooked Mexican food (we’ve had cream of broccoli and cream of cauliflower soup and chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes) and when she does cook it she’s mostly let us add our own salsa if we want. Thai food was definitely much spicier and different. I really love having fresh fruit every morning.
Besides being sick this last week I got a ton of mosquito bites and they really really itched and were not fun at all, so yesterday we bought this thing that you plug into the wall that is supposed to get rid of mosquitoes while you sleep. Hopefully it will help. We don’t have air-conditioning in the house so when it gets hot at night I really don’t want to sleep under the covers. Luckily it is really like California here and it cools off at night. It has been hotter this last week than it was the first one.
More of you need to write to me and tell me how you are doing and stuff. This morning I got homesick for all of my friends and for my parents too.
P.S. today we had Mexican hot chocolate which was really good. She also made a strawberry smoothie/milkshake thing that was good.
