So, I think I'm squeeing in several different intonations, and I don't know if anybody would even bother to have a look at ten different ones for EACH episode, so I think I'm going to just have to squee

I feel like the momentum of the first was kinda needed to magnify the awesome of the second episode, though. I could have done without the instantaneous change in tone, it was jarring, but overall, I thought it could have worked well either way, really.
Torchwood is like some fan looked at the last two series of Who, wrote themselves a cracktastic slashy AU epic centered on Jack and a bunch of OCs and minor characters, and then persuaded the BBC to film it. Which, by a huge coincidence, is EXACTLY what happened.
That is EXACTLY what happened, and the weird thing is that it's a runaway hit with the BBC, especially if they're moving it to BBC 2 in the next series. It was even a hit on the piracy side of things, which is a bit alarming but so cool, especiallly if the deal with the BBC and Azureus goes through. Downloading this last night took five hours because there were two thousand people in my fucking torrent swarm.
I don't think any network in the united states would even remotely chance it with a show like this, it wouldn't get beyond the pitch meeting, because we're still stuck in the awkward 'we want to see things blow up and rob mick jagger' phase, for the most part. But this! This is just, well, crazy! And I hope they find a way to keep that awesome going for the next series.

My theory is that someone responsible for scheduling is deeply in lust with Captain Jack, and that RTD has promised them that if they'll move Torchwood to BBC2, he'll get Jack naked in the next series. This is why we've been so cruelly teased this series.
That said, the move to BBC2 makes me slightly nervous. Huge audience rating on BBC3 really don't have any guarantee of translating into huge audience ratings on BBC2, and I'm a little surprised that they're moving it.
Don't get me started about the very noticible lack of naked!Jack. If there's one thing I hated more than Gwen's desperate need for BFF-ism, it was the fact that I didn't get to see his ass again.
Wasn't Torchwood on auxiliary rerun on BBC2. I don't know how much you follow that stuff, but it was a pretty solid sleeper hit from the numbers over there. I think the numbers game really helped because the biggest competition it had was this past season of lost on sky One, as I've been told. And quite frankly, I'd rather watch the worst episode of Torchwood any day instead of going in circles with lost again. And there was a time right before it got optioned for a second series that rumors were circulating that RTD wanted it on BBC1, which would have been the kiss of death, I think, for any remote chance of a third series, or even a whole second.
Heh. You're surprised that they're moving it, I'm surprised that it got the second series in the FIRST damn place. Again, another one of those things that would NEVER HAPPEN stateside.

With the ratings it was getting, I was fairly confident about that. But BBC2...well, I just hope I'm wrong. But it bumps up the expectations. Makes me wish it was on Channel 4 instead :-)
(Plus, if it was on C4, we'd probably already have had extended naked rimming scenes in Jack's office.)
Like I said, a show like Torchwood is way too loosely moral in all forms to get remotely any kind of second season on any kind of TV network stateside. That said, I really hope that they bump up the expectations, because that'll mean they'll have to figure out a way to bump up the viewership without completely compromising the structure of the show and facing a stylistic collapse from the inside, so to speak. This means they'll have to pay more attention, and if there's anything Torchwood needs, it's more attention.

WHAT WHAT WHAT?!? Now you've got me wanting it on C4, too, damnit. You know Jack and Ianto have done it in the safe.

What I'm worried about is that if the viewing figures don't translate (and possibly even if they do) then there'll be pressure on the show to become more...normal. More like other SF shows and less like its utterly cracktastic self.

Dude, if they let RTD put seriously underage rimming in the opening episode of Queer As Folk back in 1999, then just imagine what he could get away with with Jack and Ianto in 2007.
Oh, well, I think you're totally justified in being worried about it not becoming normalized, and I really hope that the point gets across that the reason why it's worked so far is because it's the complete and total counterpoint of normalicy, we've crossed over disfunction and have made it into instant vintage when it comes to the characters and the scenarios, but I think that the BBC wouldn't do that on the first go on a bigger network. I could be wrong, however.
Dude. Dude. You're fucking kidding me, here. You've got to be. I think Jack and Ianto could get away with sexual murder, then, if that happened in 1999. Guh.

Haven't you seen QAF UK? The very first episode, Stuart picks up the 15-year-old Nathan and takes him home, and there's nudity and rimming and masturbation and orgasms, and it's one of those moments where you have to check to see if you've fallen into a different reality, because, weh? Is that really happening on my TV?
So, anyway, you see why I feel that Torchwood and RTD are letting me down somewhat in the hot gay sex department. :-)
I'd heard about the first episode, but only in passing and I've never seen it. And bless your heart for sticking with Torchwood without all the crazy hot gay sex. They so need some next season.
