NCIS - gibbs/dinozzo - brains! - hidden depths meteorfire January 13 2011, 21:13:30 UTC
People had a tendency to write Tony DiNozzo off as a fun-loving playboy. Regardless of the fact that he was the Senior Field Agent and one-time leader of NCIS's Major Case Response Team, he tended to be written off as gullible and not particularly bright. It was a facade that he worked hard on, as underestimation always puts you one step above the enemy.

As it was, this was why his entire team knew little to nothing about him. Oh, sure, they thought they did, but did any of them know about his hobbies--his true hobbies, not just his movie watching? Tony was involved in the Hollywood scene through more than just watching movies, but it wasn't something he was interested in sharing. Neither was he interested in advertising his relationship to various DC teens, given that for some of them, a known relationship with a Fed would be bad for their health. It was his life, and he liked to keep some of it fairly private.

Therefore, when he started dating Gibbs--with 'dating' being a rather strong description of what was primarily just sex--he didn't tell Gibbs why he would often completely disappear on his days off or stay glued to the phone for hours talking about tangents and coefficients or the latest happenings in some random coastal city. As it happens, it wasn't too surprising that Gibbs put two and two together, and somehow managed to come to the conclusion that Tony was cheating on him.

Tony was not cheating on him, but Tony also didn't appreciate being accused of something that he would never do to someone he had feelings for. As it was, he eventually ended up throwing the fact that Gibbs never wanted a deeper relationship than a solely sexual relationship, and therefore had no right to an exclusive relationship with him. It was over, and Tony continued on with his life.

It wasn't until years later, after Tony had finally decided that he had enough with his team's holier-than-thou shit that Gibbs finally found out what Tony was really doing. However, by then it was too late. Tony had already moved on, and was already working on his next two degrees--education and math--and becoming a well-known name in certain circles in the film industry as the go-to guy for technical advising in relation to the military and law enforcement.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. *whimper*

But, but, but... Tony and Gibbs are supposed to be together! *wibble*

Hehe, all kidding aside, I love it. Love this side of Tony. Sad that Gibbs jumped to conclusions and didn't try to talk about it. Sad that that it broke them up. Thanks.

I tried to get them together...but they were stubborn.

Thanks! I ended up rewriting this thing twice because it kept being stubborn and insisting on being less of a Tony-has-brains thing and more of a this-is-how-Tony-supplements-his-income thing or writing the pairing out completely.

Sucks when the characters are stubborn. But it was great despite that. :)
