Oh, well, we have a king, of course, and he makes the laws and sits in judgment concerning them.

Does he sit in judgment on his own, or does he have a court of judges for, say, lesser disputes?

Oh, no, he sits in judgment on his own. Mother's often there, too, but he's the one who handles most everything, really.

Does he have to sit in judgment very often?

Well, not terribly often, no. There are always things for him to do and problems to address, of course, but most people are happy and hardworking and don't go around causing trouble, so the ones that do are few and far between.

That sounds nice. But not particularly suited for adoption in the City, wouldn't you say?

Well, I suppose it wouldn't be exactly the same. For one thing, there's so many more people in the City, so the poor king would have a great deal more work to do in order to see to everything. And I suppose it would help if he had knights and things, too, to help keep everything in running order, and it's true there aren't very many knights around. Still, I don't think it'd be impossible, really. Good things do tend to happen under the reign of a good king, and I can think of at least a few good kings that I've known since coming here.

Would you always prefer a king? What would you think about democracy?

Oh, goodness, no, I should hope not! I know some people like it, democracy, but really, I think it's rather more trouble than it's worth. Having to go around asking everyone what they think about every little thing just to get anything done seems like an awful waste of time, and especially so if no one's ever taught them anything about ruling, anyway! And especially in a place like the City where there are awful people mixed in with the good, it doesn't seem very wise to go around asking them for their say in how to do things, does it?

So no, I really do think it's much better to just have a good king and let that settle it. Then he can just rule and everyone else can go about their business, and it's not nearly so much fuss either way.
