My grandma actually bought me the red wigglers for composting as an early christmas present. I started composting a few months ago because I didn't want to just throw out bags of pine bedding and biodegratable chinchilla waste. Since I clean their cages once a week it ends up being way more than I can fit in my compost bin. I have to wait until my worm compacity gets larger to handle it I guess. So I have started to use it as "mulch" for the trees in my backyard. I've always been into composting, even if it was just tossing corn husks in a pile outside.
I have four male chins, all were previously owned and previously named. I have a black Velvet named Jesus (hay-sues) who is two, Chachi, his cagemate, who is one. I got the two of them in October. And then I have two chinchillas in another cage I "rescued" from a neglectful owner who I used to be friends with in early November. One is named Iggy and he is 7 and the other is named Bowie and he is 5. When I got the two of them Iggy was very sick and had some intestinal blockage while Bowie was ripping out his fur due to stress. They are doing much better now.
I make so produce so much organic matter, it's crazy. I have three bunnies, and the newspapers/bedding/poop from their cages is crazy! One of the bunnies has to use an underbed container for her litter box because she's 16 lbs.
Yet I still want more. Ha.
Charlie is just a regular grey Chin, but he's great. He's actually my husband's Chinchilla, and he is 14 years old (he got him when he was 16, along with his first car - both are still ticking). We just brought Charlie to live in our house with us (we used to think he's be more comfortable at his parent's house where he always was). Alex is amazed how "domesticated" Charlie has become around us, and how he's actually snuggling us.
Yes, I do vermicomposting in a large garbage can in my garage with several holes poked in the bottom for drainage (which I save in old milk jugs and plan to use as liquid fertalizer.)
Wow, a 16lb rabbit, that is huge!
Chinchillas live for a long time and in the right conditions they can be really friendly.
