Today the University of Canterbury announced its intention to 'disestablish' the Department of Theatre and Film Studies. It is suggested these disciplines are not 'core' to the College of Arts' work... though Music and Fine Arts are! It seems clear that the Universities executive are out of step with the nation. The New Zealand Ministry of Education has made drama and dance 'core' curriculum subjects in its new arts policies, and the Government continues to seek new ways to grow the creative industries. The Department of Theatre and Film Studies at Canterbury is a unique facility, attracting international staff and students who contribute boldly to worldwide developments in their field.
