I got the dreaded call this morning, my boy Bilbo has squamous cell carcinoma in his mouth and jaw.
At this point it's down to quality of life, and given it's a mouth issue (and he doesn't appear to be painful so far) I think the biggest thing I can do for his happiness is going to be making his food as good and easy to eat as possible.
I have been feeding him a mix of nutro, solid gold, and blue buffalo with addition of various and sundry (mostly baby food) treats. He started having trouble chewing this winter (I thought it was age related tooth problems at first) and I started wetting it. Once the tumor became noticeable a couple of weeks ago I started crushing the wet food but now that we've confirmed it's not an infection or something that's going away I think this is still too firm for him as a continuing diet, besides that I don't think weight control is going to be an issue anymore (he's already way too skinny).
So I need recommendations for: smooth, tasty, nutrient packed foods that will keep him fed and happy and as active as he can be in his last days.
