Thinking about getting a hedgie!

So I've wanted a hedgehog for a while now, but always ruled it out because I have cats. However, I've just read on the Hedgehogs.org FAQ that this isn't necessarily a problem. Any thoughts on this, personal experiences etc?
Also...I live in New York City, meaning hedghogs are actually illegal here. :-\ Besides the fact that it is obviously breaking the law (which, in this particular case, I have very little regard for), this concerns me because I wouldn't be able to have a Vet nearby. Do they need regular checkups, etc? I could probably find a Vet in Jersey City or Long Island, but this would be *somewhat* of a hassle for me, and I'd probably only be inclined to do it in case of an emergency or for yearly checkups. Would this make me a bad mommy?? :-\
