I don't know why I'm surprised. Maybe I'm not surprised. Maybe I'm just disappointed.
Elton John recently
railed against artists who are boycotting Arizona's anti-immigrant immigration law.
I mean, this is the man who took a gig playing at Rush Limbaugh's wedding, so I guess surprise isn't the real descriptor here.
(I esp. like the part where he claims that he doesn't have any rights as a gay man in California. Because he fucking does have some rights. He doesn't have all the rights he'd like--he doesn't have all the rights I'd like, but he has more here than many places.
No, I'm not happy my state is filled with people too stupid to understand that they were voting to take marriage away from GLBTQI folks or too hate-filled to see that GLBTQI folks deserve the right to marry too, but marriage isn't the only issue facing the GLBTQI community either. Guh!)
In other news, we're headed into the last two months of regular season baseball, and the All Star Game this year was pretty much just down the street from me. (Yes, I wanted to go. No, my regular baseball game buddies and I couldn't get tickets. Since we sometimes root for different teams, I was hoping we'd be able to go and root for the same team for once. Alas. It's probably good we didn't, as the AL lost for the first time in like 16 years to the NL.)
I'm sad but not surprised at all to see that Bud Selig is showing no signs of moving next year's ASG, which is currently scheduled to take place in Arizona.
I've already
signed the petition to move the 2011 All Star Game out of Arizona, since many, many players in the major leagues run the risk of being detained in Arizona just because of the color of their skin and the accents they have.
I thought I'd pass it on to folks here who might not have seen it.
Suffice to say that if it doesn't get moved, I won't even be watching.
I have no patience now if I ever did for the "but illegal immigrants broke the law" argument coming from people who don't ever seem to be so absolutist about the rule of law when it comes to the speed limit. I really don't. Which may be why I'm so convinced that all that anti-immigrant rhetoric isn't really about the rule of law after all.
(This minirant brought to you by the mistake I made in reading the comments on a piece in today's LA Times on immigration. Be grateful I spared you last week's rant about so-called reverse racism that was inspired by the USDA shenanigans.)
And lasty, unrelated to Arizona, some good news. The OTW is seeing results from some of its hard work. Their comm just broke the news that
the Library of Congress is about to announce an exception to the DMCA for vidders which is great news.
