As a kid I remember putting on endless "shows" for my parents. I'd organize my siblings into shows with me sometimes. But now as a parent myself, I know that mine must have been bored out of their minds sometimes, especially when I didn't seem to know when to stop. I read a brilliant article about this a while back (I think in Wondertime) where a parent admitted that she (gasp!) didn't like her kids' performances until she developed these questions to ask before they began. They were, "Did you practice? Is it short?"
I started doing this with my kids, and it works! They actually practice, and they make things short enough to enjoy or tell me what to do when I'm ready for the grand finale. Seldom has the advice of a magazine article been so useful.
