Greetings one and all,
For the first time in forever, Valentine's Day was very good. No don't get excited concerned citizens, it wasn't a traditional one for me; but thanks to great friends I dodged the old 'sitting-alone-at-home-with-a-dvd-feeling-sorry-for-myself- thanks-to-Hallmark-and-Hershey-Co.'s-fake-holiday-marketing' blues. Yes, I believe unlike the majority, that Valentine's Day is a crock. Everyone should be in love every day and show it. On that day, couples should still have a nice day and do the flowers and chocolate thing if they want to, but it shouldn't be a commercial competition. I like to think that any woman I become involved with wouldn't need a teddy bear gift basket that some company put together for $50 to know I loved her. (I saw a commercial for this the NIGHT BEFORE valentines day, narrated by Adam Corolla-yeah the Man Show guy. Good idea to get this chauvinistic, knuckle-dragging, lug nut to endorse last-minute guilt presents that someone else picks out for you when you forget Valentine's Day.) My point is this holiday has become fake thanks to commercialization because 1)it makes single people, who weren't as fortunate as I to have friends around, to feel more lonely than on any other day, and 2)it cheapens the symbolic nature of love by making people lose focus of what really shows love, which is not pre-made gift baskets, but is daily affirmation and compassionate communication. People just need to feel loved every day for being their own loving selves, not because they bought flowers and chocolate, or because they received them.
End of rant.
Ok, so what i did was help my married friends move house. They bought their first house and Valentine's Day happened to be moving day. A bunch of old work buddies were there to help, which is always fun, and despite lifting heavy stuff all day, a good time was had by all. Afterward, dinner was made for those of us who could stay, and we enjoyed the brand new new house and how fortunate the couple was. The bride made us homemade lasagna, and followed it up with very expensive cheesecake which was absolute heaven, and a celebratory champagne. So, all day I was surrounded by friends (including married ones who don't celebrate Valentine's day) who actually thanked me for being their friend and treated all of us to a nice family dinner. See, ladies, I'm a good man. :-)
And now for your moment of zen/fright, thanks to "chrissmari" for this nightmare vision:
