Patrick?!!! heavysoul February 6 2004, 12:27:34 UTC
Patrick's the character that's over the top. In the sense that he's such a man-whore moron. Yes, his delivery is very laconic and dry, but still he's the most rediculously sexist character. Jeff was my favorite, as the Steven Moffatt, the writer, and Richard Coyle, who played Jeff, agreed, he is the 12 year-old boy that is frightneningly in all of Us, but he doesn't have the sense to not say those things aloud! I can see how his over-analysis of everything vaguely seedy could be viewed as over-the-top, but that's what's so 'brilliant!' about him, his rediculously detailed psychosis. I don't know, some of us men had over-bearing/over-protective mothers that gave us religious guilt towards all things sexual, so I can relate to a degree. (translation: I am almost as repressed as "Jeff"; he's just an extremely exaggerated version for comedic purposes). He's so innocent really, which is the charm-he has a good moral fiber, but just hasn't gotten past that grade school fascination with breasts. But hell, why should we? They are quite amazing.

Steve is the perfect Everyman, with a little bit of Jeff's ability to verbally get himself into a mess. Susan is his ideal counterpart, with Sally and Jane being the same crazy poles as Jeff and Patrick; the former being insecure to a fault, and the latter being self-absorbed and permiscuous to a fault. I just think that character dynamic is brilliantly written and conceived. Without Jeff, there's no telling how much the show will change.
