In lack of a relevant post, here's my review of the new Let It Be, in response to a slightly negative review by "jimmyether":
I am one of the biggest Beatle dorks you will meet. I am also underwhelmed by this release, but only because I have literally 100 bootlegs, and have so many versions of this not so interesting (musically) period including both Get Back albums that Glyn Johns did. These are very entertaining for me due to the dialogue and false starts and even jokes that seem to betray the idea that this whole album was just torture to make. However, I knew they wouldn't release those because they really are 'naked' with plenty of bum vocal notes and screw-ups.
As far as the sound, I thought "Naked" was nice and warm and anaolgue-y, though I'm not an engineer.I particularly like hearing Billy's electric piano more clearly. 'Across the Universe', I must say, is horrible to me in it's Spector form because of the choirs-I prefer take 2 from the Anthology. I actually kind of like the fact that he used this same take and slowed it way down and phased it and all that for Let It Be, but the principle of what he did annoys me. The whole Get back project, as you know, was supposed to be live without overdubs. Phil mistook being the producer with being the artist.
In summation, I like this and think that it feels more like a album now without John's snide comments spliced in before Paul's songs in an attempt to take the piss out of him. The sequencing could have been better on this though. The rooftop tracks should have been left together as they have a similar energy to them being from the same performance (One After 909, Dig A Pony, I've Got a Feeling, Don't Let Me Down). This will do better as a representation of them at that time period than let it be has done and is great for the unwashed masses *he says in elitist mode.* Meaning, I take this stuff way too seriously than to ever be completely satisfied even with the Anthology cd's (they felt the need to dumb it down with 'outfakes'-splicing different takes together to make the outtakes resemble the final structure e.g "A Day In the Life"). For those that don't have access to or care about bootlegs, this is a great improvement.
